TAKING CARE OF YOUR JEWELRY

Here at DAM we want your piece to accompany you for as long as possible, which is why we recommend you keep it away from water (bathing, washing your hands, swimming, etc). Water and jewelry are not good friends.

Try to store your jewelry in specially designed boxes, a soft case or a ziploc bag. Some treated woods contain chemicals that can damage your jewelry.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF GOLD PLATING

Last on, first off

When you use gold plated jewelry, wear it after your makeup, perfume, spray, etc. If you use cream or lotion, wait for it to completely absorb before wearing your piece. Let your jewelry be the first thing you take off before bed; rubbing them inadvertently or night sweats could shorten the life of the gold plating.

Avoid corrosive liquids

Soap, oil, nail polish, nail polish remover, perfume, detergent and others can react with the gold plating and tarnish it. The same applies to sweat, depending on you pH and your diet, the chemicals in sweat could alter the plating.

Remove any gold plated piece when you exercise or do housekeeping activities like cleaning or gardening. Do not wear them in the shower, bathtub or pool. It’s also a good idea to remove the jewelry if you are going to cook acidic fruits or vegetables.

Avoid abrasive surfaces

Do not rub a cuff, ring or necklace with sand when you go to the beach. Try not to bump the pieces against hard surfaces.

Store them separately
After use, wrap each piece in a soft cloth or kleenex and put it in a ziploc or a small box. Avoid storing them at extreme temperatures or in harsh sunlight.

Clean it gently

Do not use traditional jewelry cleaners, like chemical solutions or polishing cloths, because they will gradually remove the gold plating. Use a dry cotton cloth and rub gently.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF STERLING SILVER

  1. Sterling silver can lose part of its shine due to oxidation ocurring when it comes into contact with the oxygen in the air. In fact, except gold and platinum, all metal react the same.

  2. Store your silver jewels in a dry and, preferably, tight place -like a ziploc bag. This way you prevent oxidation.

  3. Avoid contact with corrosive agents like chlorine, swat, oils or perfumes. Don’t expose it for too long to the light (solar or artificial).

  4. Do not store it in direct touch with wood, since it could be treated with acids that damage the surface of the piece.

  5. To keep the original brightness of your jewel, it’s advisable to clean it regularly. DO NOT use toothpaste, it’s an abrasive substance. It’s better if you use special products, like a silver cleaning cloth (which you must not wash, it doesn’t matter how dirty it gets) or a silver cleaning liquid and a dry cotton cloth.
